Joseph E. Hulsen,
Board Member and Award-Winning Artist
Passes Away on October 1, 2009
Joe resided in Union, NJ with his family. For over a decade, he lent his time and artistic expertise towards the advancement of the Les Malamut Art Gallery. Most recently, he brought to our gallery a wonderful group exhibit by the Society of Philippine American Artists.
Retired from PSE&G, he nurtured his passion for art and was an active member in a number art associations in Westfield, Scotch Plains-Fanwood, and Bedminster.
It was a gift of colored pencils from Joe’s son that prompted his return to sketching and painting. He worked in several media and styles and over the past 20 years his paintings were in numerous group and solo shows winning him many awards.

Paintings that matter are like the glow a bright light leaves on the eye after you’ve turned away or the bed sheet indentations of someone who has left. Not nostalgia, it is something else, something that has to do with the human ability to remember. Joe’s paintings are that by which he will always remain in our memory. His paintings evoked the presence of the beauty of life that surrounds us and in his absence they continue to provide for us feelings of delight, wonder, and exhilaration.
Besides his passion for art, Joe was also an avid sports fan, enjoyed walking, gardening and vacationing on Long Beach Island, NJ. Life was his inspiration, his paintings a reflection of his soul.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to: The Atlantic Home Care and Hospice, 33 Bleeker St, Milburn, NJ 07041
