Unique Yellowstone
Photography by Sherman Feller
November 2 through December 29, 2009

Sherman Feller is a retired chemist who has lived in Fanwood, New Jersey for 45 years. He became interested in photography in 1947 when he started to take photographs in Queens, New York, where he lived at that time. He used a simple box camera, developed his own film and contact prints in the basement of his home in Richmond Hill, Queens New York.
His enthusiasm grew in 1953 when he entered the US Army and spent a year in Japan, photographing people and landscapes. He gained experience taking photographs of the local culture while using the available photographic facilities to process and print his own enlargements. Three of his photographs won awards in military contests.

After leaving the Army and moving to New Jersey, he continued his interest in photography and became adept at the processing of color prints and slides in his own darkroom. Sherman has been active with the Unique Vision Workshop for several years, a group that is associated with the NJ Photography Forum and focuses on fine art photography. He has exhibited over a dozen photographs in their annual shows. Since 2007 he has had four exhibits in the Scotch Plains and Westfield libraries. Sherman currently enjoys using digital photography to capture images of nature, landscapes, and the interactions and emotions between people.

Photographing is his way of communicating his inner feelings and life experiences. When photographing people, he believes in using small cameras and natural lighting to minimize distractions from flash and allow for more candid and unposed images.
The current photographs in this exhibit were taken in August 2004 while motoring and hiking in Yellowstone National Park for a ten day period. A point-and-shoot digital Olympus 3000Z camera was used and printed on a Canon i850 printer. Some photos have been corrected for color & contrast by using Corel’s Paint Shop Pro software.
